Privacy, Data Protection and Cookies Policy

Introduction

One of togethr's main aims is promote intimacy in your most important relationship. Privacy is a key foundation for intimacy. Therefore our aim is to give you total privacy. We do this by keeping the data we ask for to a minimum, and by making the data we do collect as inaccessible as possible with encryption. We take security very seriously too, you may also like to our to the FAQ answer on security.

togethr is committed to protecting your privacy and maintaining the security of any personal information received from you. We strictly adhere to the requirements of the data protection legislation in the UK. We follow strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of information which you have given us, to prevent unauthorised access in accordance with the UK data protection legislation. We do not collect sensitive information about you except when you specifically knowingly provide it. We do not sell, rent or exchange your personal information with any third party.

The purpose of this statement is to explain to you what personal information we collect and how we may use it. This statement must be read in conjunction with the Terms and Conditions, which can be accessed at https://togethr.mobi/terms.html.

Sign Up

During the sign up process, you provide togethr with your email address and mobile phone number, and your partner's nickname, email address and mobile phone number. These details will never be used to contact you, or sold to any third party.

During the sign up process, the email addresses and phone numbers are scrambled ("hashed"), and sent in scrambled form to the togethr servers using a secure HTTPS/SSL channel. They are stored on the togethr servers in the scrambled form. Once you have been connected to your partner within togethr, the contact details you entered are removed, both from the server and your device, except for your partner's nickname and phone number which is kept on your device in a private storage area in an unencrypted state so the app can use your partner's nickname, and so that you may use a 'call' shortcut button.

Your Content

Your content includes but is not limited to: messages, favourites, quiz question answers, and shared lists. The contents of your communications and your content belong to you. Your content may be shared with your partner automatically.

When sending content to your partner, the togethr app first scrambles it using encryption, and then sends the content in scrambled form to the togethr servers using a secure HTTPS/SSL channel. The data is stored on the togethr servers in the scrambled form, in the United States. The encrypted data may be supplied to a third party messaging supplier for the sole purpose of delivering the data to your partner. (For example, Google Cloud Messaging.)

Other than sending content to your partner, or otherwise indicated in this policy, your data will not leave your device.

Accounts / Signing In

If you choose to create a togethr account, or sign into an existing one, you supply an email address and password. This email address will not be used to contact you, except in exceptional circumstances. If you choose to use a weak password, the privacy of your content may be at risk.

During the 'create account'/'sign in' process, the password you enter is scrambled ("hashed"), and the email address and scrambled password are transmitted to the togethr servers using a secure HTTPS/SSL channel. They may be stored on the togethr servers, with the scrambled password scrambled again before being stored.

If signing in, and the details supplied match those of an existing account, the content associated with that account may be downloaded to the device from the togethr servers.

Advertising

togethr may display advertising at times. By default, the platform that supplies the ads (for example, Google AdMob) may be supplied your your approximate location, gender and birthday if you have supplied them to togethr. This helps to make the ads more relevant. Ad requests are otherwise entirely anonymous. You can disable this supply of data at any time using the 'Make ads more relevant' setting within togethr's Settings menu.

Where Google advertising is used, Google may use an advertising ID for your device to generate interest and demographic categories (for example, 'sports enthusiasts' or 'inferred age: 18-34'). These interest and demographic categories will be used to serve ads better targeted to you. You can opt out of these interest-based ads using Google's Ad Settings.

Analytics

togethr uses Google Analytics (GA) to measure how users interact with its websites and apps. As a user navigates a togethr website or app, GA records information about the screens a user has seen, for example the URL of the page. Newsletter

If you choose to sign up for the togethr newsletter, your email address will be supplied and stored in plain text, and may be used to contact you occasionally with information about togethr.

Cookies

The togethr websites use a technology called "cookies" as part of a normal business procedure. Cookies are small text files that are created by a web server and stored on your computer when you visit a website. They don't do anything i.e. they are not executable code and can only be read by (you and) the website that created them. You can view and edit the cookies on your computer like any other text file using a text editor (the contents are usually just strings of unique identifiers and date/timestamps). The website that created the cookie can read the contents when you are at their website.

Cookies are widely used across the internet: you may have hundreds of cookies on your computer at any one time. Each browser has its own set of cookies so, if you run multiple browsers, you will have multiple sets of cookies on your computer.

Many websites use cookies to improve your browsing experience e.g. remember your log-in details, record which items you have selected to purchase, or even tailor what content is displayed depending on your preferences. Cookies can also be used to record 'analytics' data i.e. which web pages you visit, whether or not you arrived at the web page by clicking on an advertisement or an affiliated website. Many websites find the collection of analytics data valuable in improving the quality and content of their web sites.

In the past, cookies have had some bad press. Much was due to a general misunderstanding of what cookies are and how they work but some was due to justifiable privacy concerns relating to 3rd party tracking cookies. These cookies are used by advertising websites and track a web user across multiple sites. The good news is that all modern browsers allow you to easily block 3rd party cookies.

The togethr websites use cookies to collect analytics data. This data does not contain any content entered by you. It is collected to help understand how the togethr websites are used, in order to improve them.

All the major browsers allow you to block cookies and delete those that have already been created on your computer, usually within the 'Tools' section of the browser. These tools allow you to specify which cookies you will accept by type and often by specific websites using an exception list e.g. you can block all cookies and then list the website from which you will accept cookies. There are also a wide choice of browser add-ins that you can install if you wish greater control over persistent cookies.
